Newly married couples today are deciding on parenthood for their next step. It’s a big commitment and long journey ahead. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Get Your Fiances In Place
Before any baby making is done, it is a good idea to get all your finances sorted out. Having a baby is expensive. In the beginning you are making purchases like a crib, car seat, bottles, diapers, clothes, formula, food, strollers and toys. As the child ages, other expenses are added such as braces, glasses, books, tuition and college. Know ahead of time of the costs and be prepared for unforeseen costs as well.

2. Decide On Where To Live
Most newly married couples live in 1 bedroom condos or apartments. This is not suitable for a newborn. It is therefore imperative to discuss where you will be living for the next 5-10 years at least. A house is most suitable to raise a family. There is a backyard, more room, own laundry facilities and room to grow. However, with the working mom today, apartments, townhouses and condos can be suitable for a child.

3. How Many Children Do You Want?
You many not even realize it, but husbands also have a preference for how many children they would like. A good estimation is to look at how many brothers and sisters you and your husband have. If your husband is an only child, they most likely would want a large family, seeing that they never grew up with one. If you are from a large family yourself, you may want the luxury for a small family. Either way, come to a compromise and be alright if you have more or less that what you wanted.

4. Be Around Children
Watch your husband around other children. Is he the funny maker or the manners police? How does he deal with bullying or hitting? In turn, get yourself comfortable with children. Learn to change a diaper and calm a crying baby.

5. Get Genetic Testing
It is strongly recommended for you and your husband to undergo genetic testing. Common genetic diseases such as Down Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Klinefelter Syndrome, Celiac Disease, Tay-Sachs and Sickle-cell disease can be vital information for your unborn child.

Whatever you decide, be prepared when you do become pregnant.
